Immigration Mental Health Assessment
An immigration assessment can be essential for your case in Canada, as it highlights the significant effects that a denial can have on the mental well-being of refugees, asylum seekers, and other applicants.
What is an Immigration Assessment?
An immigration mental health assessment is an evaluation performed by a licensed professional to evaluate an individual’s mental health in the context of their immigration case. This assessment is frequently requested by immigration lawyers or government officials to assess eligibility for asylum, humanitarian or compassionate grounds, or to evaluate the individual’s capacity to cope with the stresses associated with immigration. Additionally, this assessment can attest to their mental health if they were to remain in Canada or face deportation back to their country of origin.
What is the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP)?
The Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) offers coverage for mental health services, including immigration assessments, for eligible refugees and asylum seekers. The IFHP covers the cost of one Immigration Mental Health Assessment for certain groups, including refugee claimants awaiting a decision, ineligible refugee claimants, victims of human trafficking, and detainees. Additionally, this coverage ensures that individuals can access essential mental health support through psychotherapy to address issues such as trauma, anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns.
What to expect during an Immigration Assessment?
The immigration assessment process involves a two hour session, which can be completed virtually or in person. During this session one of our Registered Psychotherapists will ask you a series of questions about your emotional health. This is to get a comprehensive understanding of your overall situation and mental state.
After the assessment, you’ll receive a detailed report within seven business days.
